We follow the school R.E. Learning and Growing as the People of God Curriculum and celebrate festivals in various religions that occur throughout the year. In both Nursery and Reception we teach phonics through the “Letters and Sounds” programme. This is supplemented with “Jolly Phonics” which teaches children how to pronounce the letter sounds.
Once children know the first set of sounds and can write them, we teach them to blend sounds to read words and to segment sounds to spell them. Children are encouraged to write independently using their phonic knowledge but they also need to learn to read and write tricky words (those that can’t be sounded out) by sight.
In Reception we work with a guided group to hear children read every day. Please help your child by hearing them read every evening. As well as reading the words we discuss the story and ask questions such as “why do you think that…..?” Or “how do you think he/she feels about…..?” By doing this we can ensure that children make rapid progress with their reading as it is important that children understand their book as well as being able to de-code the text.
